Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction, relaxation and promoting healing.

Reiki as defined by the Oxford English dictionary is:

“A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being”.

Reiki is a simple and gentle energy healing therapy, which anyone can do providing they have been attuned to Reiki by a Reiki Master.

Abbie studied her Reiki levels one and two at the GN Reiki Meditation Center in Pokhara, Nepal and has recently received a re-attunement for Level two from Padma O’Gara.

Reiki treats the whole person or animal including body, emotions, mind and spirit, this creates many beneficial effects that include relaxation, feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

There are no known contra-indications for Reiki and it is a non-intrusive treatment that can work well alongside other therapies and medications.

Abbie would never recommend Reiki over other treatments, it is to work alongside other therapies.

How can Reiki help my pet?

Increases well-being – Reiki can help maintain and improve your pet’s natural state of well-being and balance. Even if your pet is not ill, Reiki can provide a sense of peace for your pet.

Strengthens the immune system – Reiki encourages the body’s natural healing processes and strengthens the immune system.

Pain relief – Reiki can provide pain relief and reduce or prevent possible side effects of treatments. If your pet has had surgery or is undergoing treatment, Reiki can accelerate healing and provide relaxation.

Behavioural issues – Often behavioural issue are caused by stress and as Reiki has a calming effect this can make the pet more receptive to training and behaviour modification. Reiki can also benefit animals with a history of abuse, through this gentle relaxing technique we can help restore trust, create a bond between pet and owner and alleviate anxiety.

Most pets take to the energy readily and enjoy hands-on treatments. Some pets may be more comfortable from a slight distance. Whether Reiki is given directly hands-on or from across the room, treatments are equally effective.

Here at Mochdre Vets we have a dedicated Reiki space for Abbie to hold her sessions or your pet could be treated whilst undergoing hospitalisation or an operation.

Owners are welcome to be involved during a session in the Reiki room but if your pet is being hospitalised this may not be an option.

If you are interested or have any questions, please get in touch.

Mr jack has had 2 sessions of Reiki with Abbie.
He has ‘behavioural issues’ and is often impatient and will occasionally ‘take off’ whilst being led from his field to his stable.
He always seems to need something in his mouth…
Rope, hay , fork handles, clothing or humans.
During his first session I was with Abbie in his stable.
For the first few minutes he was restless and trying to nip or turning round.
However, after a few minutes he seemed to calm down and appeared quite relaxed.
I definitely felt he was enjoying and accepting it.

The second session I left Abbie to it just keeping an eye out from time to time. He was very calm and relaxed, almost asleep, with no hay needed. The session was almost an hour, and the majority of that time he was calm relaxed and obviously ‘accepting ‘ the treatment.

Since then I do feel he is calmer overall. I will definitely pursue this therapy for him.

Carole

This is our Sprollie, Monty so a mad combination in itself and when we rescued him just over 11 years, he was completely uncontrollable. As he is ball mad we channelled his boundless energy into flyball which he loved and in 2011 we were VERY proud of him when he became a champion. He is now about 13½ but sadly 2½ years ago he broke one of his front legs which led to it being amputated nevertheless this has not stopped him running round playing ball, swimming and still being mad as a hatter hence his nickname “The Mad Moo”.

Last Wednesday evening Monty Moo had a Reiki session with Abbie, we went in with an open mind as we didn’t know much about it. The setting was perfect with its subdued lighting, relaxing music and a squidgy bed or settee for Mont to choose from. He was fidgety and barky to start with and we were thinking this is not going to work but Abbie patiently persevered with her gentle touching.  Moo is the kind of dog that is always on the go and doesn’t have time to relax so we were shocked really when about ten minutes in, he settled and then not long after his eyes and head became heavy and he’d pretty much dozed off while Abbie carried on with the reiki around the whole of his body.

Half way through he did get up for a drink but then shortly afterwards again he was back to being completely chilled and sleepy – I still can’t believe it now as Moo only sleeps because he has to in order to recharge for his next day capers and what mischief he can get into.

When we left, Mont always barks with excitement when he gets in the van and then again when we arrive home but he was silent all the way, this is unheard of and we had to make sure he was ok. As we do with all of our gang, we give them a cuddle before going to bed, Moo didn’t even stir as he was still that chilled.

He is back to his mad self however we are surprised by the affect it had on him. We are seriously considering of having a reiki session before we have to make that awful decision we all dread of letting one of our beloved four legged friends go to Rainbow Bridge as if it can work on Mont, it would be such a peaceful and relaxing way of letting them slip away.

We would recommend to give reiki a go and enjoy the experience for both you and your four legged friend!

I became interested in Reiki after I attended an evening talk at Mochdre Veterinary Practice named Agility vs Fragility. During the talk we were introduced to Abbie, she explained the benefits of Reiki for animals. I was really interested to find out more, so I decided to take my collie Jake along for a session. One of my favourite hobbies is Agility for dogs and I was intrigued to see if it would have any benefit to his mentality when he competes in competitions. Jake is usually a very calm dog but put myself and him in a competition environment and he becomes as excited as a manic teenager who just wants to have fun. As for me, my nerves always get the better of me and this transmits down the lead to Jake, so you can imagine how hard it is to win the class once he’s picked up on how I am feeling.

When I arrived, Abbie had already prepared the room for the Reiki session, which I immediately picked up on as I entered the room. There was a sense of calm and tranquillity, with Reiki music playing in the background, which straight away helped me feel relaxed. Jake took an instant liking to Abbie and was more than happy for her to begin the session. It didn’t take Jake long to also feel totally relaxed in the environment. After maybe just ten minutes, he suddenly got up and walked to the corner of the room looking a bit bewildered, Abbie explained that he will have begun to feel the effect of her work, he soon came back for more and was willing to let her continue with the session. This time we let Jake lie on the sofa with me sitting next to him. I also put my hand on Jake to reassure him that I was not going to leave the room. With this he quickly began to relax again and soon began to nod off.

On my journey home I was also feeling relaxed, calm, and had such a good feeling about myself. The next morning after waking up, it took some time for me to come around and start my usual early routine of letting out the chickens and geese etc. Usually Jake always follows me closely to help with the morning chores, but not this morning, he was still snuggled up in his bed and was very content in letting me do it all by myself. I enquired to Abbie whether I too could have been affected by the session and to this she agreed.

I will certainly be booking another Reiki Session with Abbie, but this time a few days before our next competion, so I will keep you posted as to whether me and Jake can shake off both of our nervous energy and improve our skills at competition level.

Donna & Jakey

Thank you so much for Daisy’s reiki session it was so good and really interesting.

She’s been really good and she did seem sleepy a little bit earlier than normal last night. She hasn’t been any hungrier which I’m really pleased about.

I’ve been a bit unwell so we didn’t get to beach yesterday but today she really was as good as gold! We then came to Catherine’s to look after Phoebe, Jazz and Buzz. Whilst I was in the garden I went to put the bins away, normally Daisy will either take the opportunity to get up to mischief or wait by the gate but today she went inside and settled down on the sofa!!

I’ll definitely be bringing her in again for another session and I’ll call next week to book her in.

Thank you so much and I hope Drum is doing really well and you have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Luci and Daisy

Abbie came to see Rowy nearly two weeks ago to do reiki on her. At first Rowy was unsure because she had not met Abbie before, but she soon settled down once Abbie started, Rowy became very responsive to the reiki and began to relax. Rowy becomes very twitchy around her withers, but as she relaxed she stopped twitching and she even allowed Abbie to go all around her head, the only area she was not happy with was her back end, but I think next time she will be happier to allow Abbie to go there as she will know her and will know she is not harming her.

I can honestly say that even after two weeks she is still very chilled and relaxed especially when tied up out side her stable where normally she would be moving around.

I would recommend it to other horse owners,

Thank you Abbie.

Regards

Barbara and Rowy

After attending the talk on agility vs fragility I booked a reiki session for Misty using the free session given after the evening.

I have received reiki myself and was curious as to how it would work on Misty.

Abbie was wonderful. She had primed the room ready for our session and explained what Reiki was and how Misty may react.

Misty was at ease straight away and did wonder why she wasn’t going for hydro but soon settled down next to me on the sofa.  It was amazing ! Misty was a little unsettled to start with but Abbie explained that this was normal as new sensations where being felt by Misty.  A little while later Her breathing changed as she accepted the energy from Abbie and relaxed totally. She even began to nod off she was so content and really enjoying these sensations.  I must admit that I too felt so calm and relaxed that I could have slept.

It was a shame when the session finished but whatever energy Misty had received continued as she was so relaxed and once home slept.

Since our reiki Misty has been much calmer and attentive.  She has a different look about her which I can’t put my finger on but it’s brilliant.

Thank you Abbie and I will be booking another session for Misty.
